چکیده

This article establishes that Arrow’s General Possibility Theorem has only indirect application to engineering design. Arrow’s Theorem states that there can be no consistent, equitable method for social choice. Many engineering design decisions are based on the aggregation of preferences. The foundation of many engineering decision methods is the explicit comparison of degrees of preference, a comparison that is not available in the social choice problem. This explicit comparison of preference levels is coupled with the choice of an aggregation method, and some forms of aggregation may be inadequate or inappropriate in

The dilemma of Rationality or Providing Efficiency in Monetary Policy Making: An Application of Arrow’s

Financial frictions inducted in the model is a new contribution to monetary economics. Herein, an analytical tool arranges monetary policymaking in the form of two steps procedure. In the first step, an appropriate amount of money supply should be assessed; and in the second step, that appropriate amount should be allocated to several sectors. The Central Bank obligates the step of assessment a...

Programming social choice in logic: some basic experimental results when profiles are restricted

Social choice theory argues mathematical models and their logical consequences for group decision making based on individuals’ preference orderings axiomatically. The most basic results have been proved in this field are two impossibility results for group decision making. Arrow’s general (im)possibility theorem for preference aggregation procedures, i.e., there is no nondictatorial social welf...

Expertise and Complexity in the Social and Engineering Sciences: An Extended Sen’s Theorem

Both the social and engineering sciences search for appropriate aggregated outcomes— a search that can be accompanied with complexities and inefficiencies. As shown here, certain difficulties are direct consequences of adopted approaches; e.g., management style, choice of a division of labor, use of expertise and experts, or even the modeling of the physics. Particularly troubling is that even ...

Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem on Social Choice Systems

Social choice theory is a field that concerns methods of aggregating individual interests to determine net social preferences. Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem states that no social choice system can satisfy all requirements in a collection of “reasonable” criteria. We make the notion of “reasonable” voting systems precise by stating the four properties that voting systems must have in order to be...

Decision making beyond arrow's "impossibility theorem, " with the analysis of effects of collusion and mutual attraction

In 1951, K. J. Arrow proved that, under certain assumptions, it is impossible to have group decision making rules which satisfy reasonable conditions like symmetry. This Impossibility Theorem is often cited as a proof that reasonable group decision making is impossible. We start our paper by remarking that Arrow’s result only covers the situations when the only information we have about individ...
